Statement on March 2025 Regular Session

Commissioner Dave Ray Shares Thoughts on Tomorrow’s Commission Meeting

Tomorrow, March 25, 2025, the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners will meet to discuss several important issues that will directly impact our community. As your Commissioner, I want to share what’s on the agenda and how these decisions will shape our county moving forward.

One of the most significant topics is a proposal to purchase a .76-acre piece of land next to the Lawrence County Public Library. This expansion is a forward-thinking investment that will allow the library to grow in the coming years, providing more space for educational programs, community events, and improved services. Libraries play a vital role in our community, and this step will help secure its place as a resource for generations to come.

We will also consider applying for a state grant to upgrade water services in Leoma. If approved, this grant will help fund the construction of a new water booster station, improving water pressure and service reliability for families and businesses in the area. The county will contribute matching funds to support this project. Investing in water infrastructure is essential for public health and economic growth, and this grant would go a long way in making necessary improvements.

Another important resolution is a proposal to increase litigation taxes for General Sessions Court. These small fees help keep our court system running efficiently by ensuring it has the resources needed to serve our residents. While no one likes additional costs, this is a necessary step to maintain a fair and effective legal system.

We will also discuss the HOME Grant, which helps fund housing improvements for local residents. Tomorrow’s vote is about putting the right policies and procedures in place to make sure these funds are used properly. Safe and affordable housing is important to the well-being of our community, and this program can make a real difference for those in need.

Additionally, the Commission will review a proposal to declare surplus property from the Highway Department and approve its disposal. Over time, county departments accumulate equipment that becomes outdated or is no longer needed. Selling or repurposing these items helps keep operations efficient and ensures we aren’t wasting valuable storage space on equipment that no longer serves a purpose.

Each of these resolutions represents an opportunity to strengthen Lawrence County by making strategic investments in infrastructure, public services, and long-term community resources. These decisions are made with our residents in mind, ensuring that tax dollars are spent wisely and that we continue moving forward in a responsible way.

If you have any questions or thoughts about these issues, I encourage you to reach out. Your input helps shape the decisions we make, and I value the opportunity to hear from you. It is an honor to serve as your Commissioner, and I look forward to tomorrow’s meeting as we work together for a stronger, more prosperous Lawrence County.
